Activity Ideas To Teach About Happiness and Feelings

Many kids have big emotions and just don’t know how to handle them. This can result in outbursts and meltdowns. If you have a child that doesn’t know what to do with his big emotions, there are lots of ways you can help them understand these emotions.

Be a Role Model

First, be a role model. Kids learn about emotions and how to express them from watching others. Help your child learn how to express them appropriately by showing them how you are feeling and explaining how you are going to deal with those emotions. For example:

  • “I feel sad. I am going to play some music to cheer me up”
  • “I feel angry. I am going to go take a time out in my room”
  • “I am happy. Let’s dance and sing.”

Encourage them to Express their Feelings

Then, encourage your child to verbally express how they feel. When your child does tell you their feelings, praise it. Not only does this show feelings are normal, but it helps your child understand they are ok to talk about.

Do Craft and Activities that Teach Emotions

Next, do some activities to enforce what they have learned. Below are some great craft activities that you can do with your child to help them understand the different emotions. While you learn about different emotions, ask your child questions such as:

  • What should you do if you feel sad, happy, mad, etc?
  • When You feel sad, mad, happy etc what do you do?
  • How can you tell someone how you feel?

Always Listen to Your Child’s Feelings

Finally, if you want to teach good coping skills, stay present with your child. Resist the urge to make their bad feelings go away. When feelings are minimized or dismissed, they tend to be expressed in unhealthy ways.
